A Practical Guide to Getting Started with Acrylic Paint

Know the pace of the medium

Acrylic paint is valued for its flexibility and its relatively quick drying time. That speed can help you build layers during one session, but it also means mixtures on the palette may begin to change before you finish using them. Work in planned sections, mix only what you need, and keep the palette organized so that useful colors are easy to find.

Prepare a simple palette

Start with a small selection that can produce a broad range of mixtures. Make a color chart and label each mixture so you can reproduce it later. If a mixture looks different after drying, record that difference; wet paint can look unlike the final dry layer. Use separate areas for clean colors and mixed colors to avoid unintentionally dulling bright hues.

Select a suitable surface

Acrylics can be used on various prepared surfaces, but each one affects absorbency, texture, and the appearance of a stroke. Check that the surface is appropriate for acrylic paint and follow any preparation instructions. If you are unsure, test a small area before beginning a finished piece. Surface preparation is part of the painting process, not an afterthought.

Control edges and layers

Because acrylic paint can set quickly, decide which edges should remain sharp and which should blend. Work wet-in-wet when you want a softer transition, or let a layer dry before adding a more defined shape. Thin layers can build color gradually; thicker applications create a different texture. Try these approaches in a small study before using them in a complex painting.

Keep tools in good condition

Rinse brushes promptly during a session and do not let paint dry in the bristles or around the ferrule. Clean the palette before residue becomes difficult to remove, following the material's care guidance. Close paint containers when you pause. A few simple habits preserve brush shape and reduce the amount of paint wasted.
